The Mariners Centre expansion will have universal change rooms.
The new building under construction will have private, fully enclosed cubicles for changing, showering and washroom use.
Chair of the expansion committee Nicole Albright says it falls in line with other projects across the country.
“This is a safe option. There are no group showers or change rooms. They aren’t gendered, they’re each an individual cubicle,” said Albright.
They’ll be off the main lobby of the building, which will house a pool, fitness centre and walking track.
Albright says it gets away from traditional change rooms.
“In the past you’d go into a change room, and you’d have older people, younger people, some were comfortable and some not. This avoids all of that.”
Albright says construction is on schedule, and opening is scheduled for the fall of 2026.
