Celebration of life for two Dryden drowning victims

By Scott Pettigrew Aug 7, 2025 | 4:55 PM

The family of the two children who drowned last week in Dryden are inviting the community to a celebration of life.

12-year-old Joyclyn Grant was playing along the shores of the Wabigoon River on July 31st when she slipped into the deep water. Her 15-year-old brother Kayden, jumped in despite not being a strong swimmer to try to rescue his sister but both children drowned.

The family had only moved to the Dryden area from Hamilton about a month ago.

Grandmother Elva Reid says there will be a fundraising BBQ at the celebration of life at the Government Dock pavilion from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm.

They hope that the money will help ensure that every child has access to swimming lessons. Reid is also planning to reach out to Premier Doug Ford to ask that swimming lessons be a mandatory part of the school’s physical education program.

A GoFundMe page has also been established to raise funds. You can donate by clicking here.
