Tropical activity appears to be picking up in the Atlantic Ocean after a slow start to the season.

Tropical storm Dexter has become the fourth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, forming near Bermuda on Monday.

It is expected to track east-northeastward over the next few days, according to the Canadian Hurricane Centre.

“Dexter is expected to remain well south of the Maritimes with no major impacts expected in Canada,” the agency said in a social media post.

This marks the first named storm in the Atlantic since Chantal formed back on July 4.

However, hurricane forecasters are monitoring two other areas of potential development over the coming days.

A weak surface trough off the southeastern United States has a 40 per cent chance of becoming a tropical depression over the next seven days.

Meanwhile, a tropical wave over the far eastern tropical Atlantic has a 50 per cent chance of becoming a tropical depression over the next week.
