Power restored in Yarmouth after smoke reported at 2 businesses

Power has been restored in Yarmouth, Friday evening, after a bump had firefighters investigating at several businesses.

About 2,000 Nova Scotia Power customers were affected late afternoon, that includes a portion of Starrs Road and rural areas past Arcadia and Melbourne.

Yarmouth fire chief Mike Deveau says they were initially called to Home Hardware due to smoke in air-handling units.

“We did an inspection of the inside of the building and determined the problem was probably on the roof, there was smoke coming from air handling units, which pushed smoke inside the building,” said Deveau.

After that scene was clear, firefighters were called to Dollarama for a similar issue.

They cleared the scene just after 4 p.m, estimated restoration time for power is 8 Friday night.

No word on what caused the outage, but Deveau says it appears the area lost one phase of three-phase power.

Nova Scotia Power was calling it a transmission interruption.
