An active wildfire in Tantallon is now being held.

It’s in the south end of Big Indian Lake.

In a news release, the city says firefighters started to leave the scene at 8:30 p.m., while crews from the Department of Natural Resources will monitor conditions overnight.

Crews will return to the scene Thursday morning.

In a post on social media just before 8 p.m., Wednesday, Halifax Professional Fire Fighters say the fire was knocked down before it could spread.

“Special thanks to the skilled DNR helicopter pilots deployed from the Shubenacadie Flight Operations Centre, who began water drops before ground crews could access the fire – a decisive factor in containing it,” says the fire union.

The fire union says they were dispatched to the scene around 3:10 p.m., near Pipeline Road by Head of St. Margaret’s Bay.

Once on scene, crews saw heavy smoke coming from a “heavily wooded area.”

The city says there is currently no risk to any residents or structures.

The Department of Natural Resources says it is about 1.2 hectares in size.

Conditions are very dry in the province. All of Nova Scotia is under a burn ban, which is now in effect until mid-October.
