Hot and stormy weather for Fort Frances, Emo, and Rainy River

It’s a sweltering day across the Fort Frances region, with both a heat warning and a severe thunderstorm watch in effect.

Environment Canada says humidex values are expected to reach around 36 today, making it feel very hot and sticky. Even though temperatures might be slightly cooler than earlier in the week, the humidity will still make conditions uncomfortable. Relief is expected later this evening as the air begins to cool.

People are being reminded to take steps to stay cool—drink water regularly, close blinds or curtains, and use fans or air conditioning if you have them. If your home is too warm, consider heading to a cooler public space like a library, community centre, or shaded park. And remember: never leave anyone or any pets in a parked car.

On top of the heat, there’s also a severe thunderstorm watch for the same region. Forecasters say conditions are right for the development of dangerous storms this afternoon and evening, especially closer to the Minnesota border.

These storms could bring wind gusts up to 110 kilometres per hour, hail as large as 4 centimetres in diameter, heavy downpours, and even the possibility of a tornado.

If threatening weather approaches, take cover immediately. And if you hear thunder, head indoors—lightning can strike even if a storm is still a few kilometres away.
