Police warn of hoax heat pump company scam

By Jacob Moore Jul 25, 2025 | 8:58 AM

Halifax police are warning about a scam involving a fake heating and cooling company.

Investigators say two men are pretending to be the company on social media, offering an energy efficiency rebate program, according to a news release from police.

They set up appointments with their victims and ask for personal documents, like power and electricity bills, property tax bills, or a driver’s license.

They use that information to help the victims apply for loans that could be used for installing heat pumps, but the fraudsters transfer the money to themselves instead.

Then, they tell the victim that a government efficiency rebate will reimburse them.

Police say the business is a hoax.

In both cases, once the scammers got the money, they cut off all contact with the victims and left them liable to repay the loan.

Halifax police say that in once case, a contractor was also hired to install heat pumps and was never paid for the work.

Officers say people should be cautious of salespeople and “pressure tactics,” and do not give personal information to anyone unless you have verified the legitimacy of their organization.
