Ontario Provincial Police are in the midst of a traffic safety blitz.
Part of the campaign is focusing on commercial vehicles.
Sergeant Kerry Schmidt reports that there were more than 8,800 collisions in 2024 involving large trucks.
“The larger the truck, if you’re involved in a collision, the more potential there is for injury,” says Schmidt in a video posted on social media.
“And that’s why we want to make sure those vehicles, along with all vehicles on the roads, are being operated safely, responsibly.”
Schmidt says among last year’s collisions, 900 resulted in injuries, while 73 people were killed.
OPP are working with the Ministry of Transportation and others on the initiative.
A recent truck inspection was held near Vermilion Bay.
“Of the 845 vehicles that were stopped, every single one of them passed, and there were no signs of impairment. Two vehicles were taken off the road because of safety violations and defects,” says Schmidt.
Police are also watching for motorists who display dangerous driving habits such as speeding, aggressive driving or following too close.
The blitz continues all this week.
