The province will assist an affordable housing project in Yarmouth.

The two buildings under construction on Shaw Avenue feature a combined 24 units, 14 of them considered affordable.

Premier Tim Houston announced over $2.6 million for the project, it’s through the Affordable Housing Association of Nova Scotia.

He says having a safe, affordable place to live is important.

“And there is a need for housing. We’ve been focused on healthcare and housing from day one, and we’re starting to see the results, but there is more work to be done, “said the Premier.

Houston also toured the Mariners Centre expansion, and the Yarmouth Regional Hospital, where a new emergency department is being constructed.

He adds that Yarmouth is growing.

“Just arriving in town and going past the Mariners Centre, it gave me a boost to see that coming to life. People living here also feel energy, and that type of positive momentum is really important.”

The federal government gave $3.9 million, while the town donated the land.

The first tenants are expected to move in early next year.
