Wildcats’ Gardiner MacDougall named QMJHL’s top coach

Two big honours for the Moncton Wildcats after a highly successful season for the junior hockey team.

The Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) handed out eight Golden Pucks on Thursday.

Gardiner MacDougall was named Coach of the Year and earned the Ron-Lapointe Trophy.

MacDougall led the Wildcats to a franchise record of 53 wins and 108 points.

The Wildcats also led the QMJHL in offence and defence, as well as penalty kill efficiency.

Meanwhile, Caleb Desnoyers was awarded the Michael-Bossy Trophy as top prospect for the professional level.

The incoming team captain scored 84 points and led the league with 11 game-winning goals. According to NHL Central Scouting, he is ranked seventh among North American prospects.

Desnoyers was also a finalist for the most valuable player award, which was given to Jonathan Fauchon, who won the scoring championship with the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada and the Rimouski Océanic.
