The Geary Street green space is no longer going to be a designated tent site in HRM.
In a release on Wednesday, the city says a notice has been issued to those sheltering there, with a deadline to leave by 5 p.m., Sunday, June 22.
According to HRM, over the past three years there have been consistently fewer people sleeping rough at this site, and it is being used less than other designated locations in recent months.
The city says there are several available spaces at multiple indoor shelters as well as temporary housing and over the next three weeks those staying at Geary Street will be offered resources and supports.
This includes transportation for people and their belongings to indoor shelter and housing options with storage options for their belongings.
As of Friday, city staff say there were 51 tents and four trailers in the remaining designated locations.
“The were established in July 2022 to address an immediate need to ensure people had a location to go to if they had no other option but to sleep rough,” the city says in a statement.
They add, they were always clear the designated locations would be temporary.
