New Brunswick is being urged to follow the lead of other provinces and adopt pay transparency legislation.
The call comes from a brand new campaign launched by the New Brunswick Coalition for Pay Equity.
“We’re launching this campaign because it’s time to break the silence around pay,” Raphaëlle Valay-Nadeau, chair of the coalition, said in a news release.
“As long as pay remains in the shadows, inequities are allowed to persist and deepen.”
Proposed measures include requiring employers to include salary ranges in job postings and forcing large employers to report on pay gaps.
The coalition also suggests the province protect the right of employees to discuss their pay and prohibit questions about past salaries during hiring.
“Too often, pay disparities go unspoken — even when they’re against the law, like paying a woman less than a man for the same work,” added Valay-Nadeau.
“Legislating pay transparency would finally make these gaps visible, and help put an end to them.”
