Lunenburg County is taking part in Emergency Preparedness Week, which runs from May 4 to 10 across Canada. The theme this year is “Be Prepared. Know Your Risks,” and officials are encouraging residents to use the week to review or create emergency plans for their households.

Angela Henhoeffer, Emergency Manager for the Lunenburg County Regional Emergency Management Organization (REMO), says everyone has a role to play when it comes to preparing for the unexpected.

“The campaign is aimed to help Canadians take action to protect themselves and their families during emergencies,” Henhoeffer said. “Working together with community leaders, first responders, non-government organizations, and all levels of government, Lunenburg County can build a more resilient and safer community.”

This year, residents are being asked to prepare and showcase their emergency kits or household plans — including vehicle and pet kits. Organizers say the more people are ready to handle the first 72 hours of an emergency, the better the entire region will fare.

Lunenburg REMO is also holding a contest to encourage participation, with a 5100-watt generator up for grabs courtesy of Castle Building Supplies in Blockhouse and Chester.
