SailGP to make waves in Halifax again in 2026

A global sailing competition is set to take over Halifax harbour once again.

SailGP is coming back.

Ten, 50-foot catamarans, with 12 teams from around the world zip around the harbour with speeds that can reach 100 km/h.

The event was a huge success in 2024, with tickets that sold out within 12 minutes, bringing tens of thousands to the waterfront every day as well as millions of dollars to the economy.

SailGP was huge for Halifax and was the first-ever stop in Canada.

In a release, CEO Sir Russell Coutts says they are “thrilled” to be heading to Halifax, a “top fan favorite” on their calendar.

“We had an incredible turnout by fans who were passionate for our racing last year in Halfiax, and combined with the challenging race conditions, it promises to be a standout even in our 2026 season,” says Coutts.

Sail Nova Scotia is also very pleased to bring SailGP back to our province.

“I have no doubt Canada’s Ocean Playground will put on an unforgettable event again,” says President Sarah Flanagan.

The season will start in Austrailia in January, head to North and South America before coming here, June 2026.
