The new chief of the Kennebecasis Regional Police Force is officially on the job.

Mike Young took over the force’s top role just over two weeks ago on March 24.

He succeeds Steve Gourdeau, who retired after nearly 3.5 years as chief.

“Chief Gordeau has done a fabulous job,” Young said during a quarterly update to Quispamsis council this week.

“He’s left me in a very good position where I can just build on the already great work that he and his staff have done.”

Young was an inspector with the Saint John Police Force who was serving as acting deputy chief at the time of his departure.

He had more than 26 years of service in various leadership and supervisory roles within the force.

Young managed major crime, street crime, family protection and forensic identification units.

The chief said he is excited to take on the new role and is looking forward to working with council.

A big part, continue on a great relationship that Chief Gordeau and his staff have established,” said Young.

“The big piece to that, ensuring great communication, transparency and accountability.”

Young said he plans to continue meeting with municipal councils on a quarterly basis.
