Premier Holt outlines N.B. response to U.S. trade shifts

With evolving U.S. trade policies causing uncertainty, Premier Susan Holt spoke out about keeping New Brunswick businesses prepared and supported

Although Canada did not face new tariffs from U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement on Wednesday, Premier Holt emphasized that the uncertainty remains.

“We are awaiting the executive order on this so that we can get a clear picture of how today’s news impacts our province,” Holt said.

With over 90 per cent of New Brunswick’s exports that goes to the United States, the province relies heavily on its trade relationship with its southern neighbour.

Holt expressed concern about the damage that unnecessary tariffs can inflict on both economies, describing them as “unnecessary taxes that end badly for both of our countries.”

While steel, aluminum, and automobile tariffs do not directly target New Brunswick’s primary industries, their ripple effects are still a concern.

Holt emphasized that the provincial government’s support programs, announced on March 4, are still moving forward to assist businesses affected by the uncertainty.

New Brunswick’s measures to combat the impacts of tariffs include halting the purchase of U.S. goods, signing no new contracts with American suppliers, and promoting labour mobility through legislation.

Holt underscored the importance of ongoing dialogue with U.S. governors, senators, and congressional representatives, aiming to build momentum toward a tariff-free trade environment.

When asked whether New Brunswick had “dodged a bullet” by avoiding new tariffs, Holt acknowledged the relief but remained cautious.

“I’m not prepared to celebrate yet because we want more clarity,” she said, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance and adaptability in response to the unpredictable U.S. administration.

Premier Holt views this challenging period as an opportunity to diversify New Brunswick’s economy and strengthen its global position.
