Part of a playground on Saint John’s lower west side is closed until further notice after being damaged by fire.

City officials said a play structure at the Market Place West playground suffered significant damage in the weekend fire.

“Vandalism like this comes with a significant cost in time and resources, and unfortunately, the playground may be closed for an extended period,” the city said in a social media post on Monday morning.

The incident has been reported to the Saint John Police Force, and an investigation is underway, according to the city.

Officials are asking people to stay away from the affected area while the damage is repaired.

A spokesperson for the Saint John Police Force confirmed that an investigation is underway.

Staff Sgt. Sarah Hobbs said it is too early in the investigation to determine if the fire was deliberately set.

Anyone with information should contact the Saint John Police Force at 506-648-3333 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
