Saint John police are reporting an increase in calls regarding tool thefts throughout the city.

Police said tools are often targeted in break-ins, as well as thefts from vehicles and construction sites.

The force outlined a number of steps that can be taken to help prevent tool thefts and aid in the recovery of stolen tools.

Tools should be stored in a secure and locked location when not in use — never in plain sight or left unattended.

Police said you should keep a detailed inventory of your tools, including photos, serial numbers and proof of purchase.

It is also a good idea to engrave or mark tools with unique identifiers to make it easier to identify and recover them.

The public is encouraged to report any suspicious activity in their neighbourhood, especially people loitering around properties, sheds and construction sites.
