Premier Ford pushes back against U.S. tariffs on automobile imports

By Alex Allan Mar 27, 2025 | 12:05 PM

Ontario Premier Doug Ford is speaking out against U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to impose 25 per cent tariffs on cars, light trucks, and key automobile parts.

In a social media post, Ford criticized the tariffs, calling them harmful to American families and disruptive to U.S. markets.

He expressed concern that the tariffs would raise costs and create uncertainty, putting jobs at risk.

Ford also revealed he had spoken with Liberal leader Mark Carney, saying they agreed Canada must stand firm and united in the face of this trade challenge.

He emphasized his support for the federal government’s preparation of retaliatory tariffs to protect Canadian workers and industries.

Trump announced the new tariffs through an executive order earlier this week, stating that they will apply to a wide range of automotive imports.
