A major repair is likely coming next year for Mariners Centre.
The ice-pad inside the main arena is nearing its end-of-life, according to the Mariners Centre Board of Directors.
Failing pipes have produced leaks beneath the floor, and experts have said it’s time for a new pad.
Board chair Daniel Muise says they’re aiming to have it replaced, starting in the spring of 2026.
“We have to let the tenants know well in advance that they may have to find another venue if they want to hold an event in the main arena while the work is underway,” said Muise.
The board has asked the three local municipal units that own the Mariners Centre to fund the replacement.
It could cost a combined $2 million.
“We want to do this in the shoulder season, so it won’t effect hockey and figure skating too much. We want to start in April next year and have it ready by the fall of 2026,” added Muise.
He says the likelihood of third-party funding for the project is low, although they remain in touch with the province.
The Town of Yarmouth, Municipality of the District of Yarmouth and the Municipality of Argyle must all approve the work at separate meetings.
