Thunder Bay has released a statement clarifying the position of a local scrap metal company’s ability to scrab or salvage the James Whalen Tugboat.
A discussion at city council’s Monday evening committee of the whole meeting led to the suggestion that Harbour Metals was willing to perform salvage work at no charge.
A member of council had been given that information by a member of the public.
The company has made no offer to do so.
Administration was unaware of this suggestion until it was brought forward at the meeting.
Council referred the Harbour Metals option back to Administration to review.
“After investigating this matter, we’ve determined there was no actual proposal or viable option put forward by Harbour Metals,” said Commissioner of Infrastructure and Operations, Kayla Dixon. “We regret any inconvenience this misunderstanding may have caused Harbour Metals, who were identified without their knowledge or involvement.”
Administration will present a follow-up report to city council at its April 7 meeting, reaffirming the initial recommendation to dispose of the James Whalen.
