Small businesses push for change as economic pressures continue

By Alex Allan Mar 25, 2025 | 1:16 PM

Canadian small businesses are calling on the federal government for support as they face rising costs, trade barriers, and excessive red tape.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) has released a 13-point platform aimed at improving the business environment and helping entrepreneurs remain competitive.

Key recommendations include cutting payroll taxes, eliminating the carbon tax, and reducing red tape.

This platform addresses growing concerns among small business owners. A recent survey conducted by CFIB shows that nine out of 10 owners are struggling to plan for the future.

CFIB President Dan Kelly emphasized the need for immediate action.

“Red tape and trade barriers are holding back productivity. Bold action is essential to protect businesses and jobs,” Kelly said.

Executive Vice-President Corinne Pohlmann stated that the platform demands clear timelines for balancing Canada’s federal budget, addressing the significant concerns of business owners.

“Small businesses are the backbone of Canada’s economy. These recommendations will ensure they can invest, grow, and compete both locally and globally,” Pohlmann said.

CFIB represents 100,000 small business owners and wants the next federal government to focus on these key actions.
