Dryden city council is generally supportive of a Buy Canada approach to its purchasing policy.

A resolution is being brought forward to favour Canadian made products or businesses, or at least not American companies.

CAO Roger Nesbitt thinks it’s important to support local businesses.

“I think where it makes sense for our operations, where we can support our local economy or our domestic economy, and we should be taking every step we can to do that during this time,” Nesbitt explained to Dryden city council Monday night.

“There are many opportunities to support economies and such that are treating Canada in a more fair manner.”

Nesbitt says the City of Dryden doesn’t actually do a lot of business with American-owned companies or contractors, but it could influence their purchases or tendering going forward.

Councillor Bryan Tardiff says he supports the resolution, but they have to add China to the list of countries on their “do not purchase” list, because it has also imposed significant tariffs on Canada.

He adds that it’s difficult because the city will have to determine the origin of where the products are actually made, even if they are ordering from a Japanese or European country.
