CHIMO Helpline shutting down after funding cut

By Brad Perry Mar 24, 2025 | 9:32 AM

A provincial crisis phone line is shutting down its operations at the end of this week due to a cut in funding.

The CHIMO Helping launched in 1971 and is operated by the John Howard Society of Fredericton.

However, officials said recent provincial funding cutbacks mean they can no longer sustain the program’s operations.

“Despite our best efforts to seek alternative solutions, the financial challenges have made it impossible to continue delivering the level of service and care that our community deserves,” the society said in a news release.

The society added that it will work closely with community partners to connect people with alternate support resources.

CHIMO provides confidential, bilingual crisis intervention services that are accessible 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It also offers a live chat option from 5 p.m. to midnight daily.

The helpline aids people with issues such as emotional distress, anxiety, loneliness, general information/resources, relationships, depression, mental health, and thoughts of suicide.

“We want to extend our deepest gratitude to our dedicated staff, volunteers, and the countless individuals who have supported this program over the years,” said the society.

“Your commitment and generosity have made a lasting difference in the lives of so many New Brunswickers.”
