Nominations open on Monday for the upcoming local government byelections on April 14.

There are 15 vacancies on 11 local governments across the province that need to be filled.

  • Arcadia: mayor
  • Belle-Baie: one councillor (Ward 5)
  • Campobello Island: one councillor (Ward 2)
  • Fundy Albert: mayor and one councillor (Ward 1)
  • Hartland: one councillor (Ward 2)
  • Lakeland Ridges: one councillor (Ward 4)
  • Memramcook: one councillor-at-large
  • Miramichi: two councillors-at-large
  • Miramichi River Valley: one councillor-at-large and one councillor (Ward 1)
  • Sunbury-York South: two councillors (one each in wards 1 and 2)
  • Tracy: one councillor-at-large

If more than one candidate is nominated for a position, a byelection will be held.

Kim Poffenroth, the municipal electoral officer, encouraged residents to consider putting their names forward.

“Serving on a council allows individuals to give back to their communities and have a say on the future planning in the place where they and their families live,” Poffenroth said in a news release.

Nomination papers may be picked up from a municipal returning officer or downloaded from the Elections New Brunswick website.

Nominations are open until 2 p.m. on March 21.
