A Halifax police officer has been cleared of wrongdoing by the province’s police watch dog after a woman’s eye was damaged during an arrest.

The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) says an officer did not use excessive force during the incident.

It was in August when police were called to a Dartmouth apartment building because a man and a woman, who know each other, refused to leave the property while intoxicated and no longer welcome there.

The woman resisted arrest by hitting, kicking and spitting at the officers and a struggle broke out.

She was then hit in the face by police, and the retina in her right eye was torn.

The investigation began on September 3.
