Upgrade to Riverview’s alert system affecting some users

By Tara Clow Feb 26, 2025 | 12:43 PM

If you’ve noticed alerts from the Town of Riverview have been a bit silent this month, you may be one of around 117 users affected by a system glitch.

It happened on February 6, and some of their users were opted out of receiving alerts via text or email without knowing it.

Tyla Finlay, director of corporate communications, says an upgrade was implemented in the system in the background with their programmer, and the town only discovered the problem on February 18, when other alerts were sent out.

Some of the individuals affected have contacted the Town of Riverview, and Finlay says they are in the process of contacting everyone who was impacted, to have them verify their account again.

During Monday’s committee of the whole meeting, Councillor Heath Johnson stated he was one of those who was affected.

“On February 6, they (the alerts) just stopped,” Johnson said.

Mayor Andrew LeBlanc says staff have been very responsive.

“They’re working with the residents that have run into issues. Technology, this was always a risk when we implemented this strategy that things like this could happen,” LeBlanc said.

A reminder from the town that even if it is not storming, there could be on-street parking restrictions in place.

“Even if it’s not storming, doesn’t mean there’s not an alert in place because it can take two or three days to clean up after a major storm,” Finlay stated.

Checking the online alert dashboard is also encouraged. Users who subscribe to alerts can opt-in to receive information via texts or emails.
