Lakehead University is celebrating 20 years of Research and Innovation Week.

Over 30 events are planned including public lectures, interactive exhibits, art and music performances, and more.

“I think it’s really a time to celebrate, I think it’s also really time to publicize and let the public know some of the research we’re doing,” explained Vice-President of Research and Innovation, Dr. Andrew P. Dean. “By opening our campus to the public and the world we can highlight the profound impact our faculty, student, and staff researchers have on our community and beyond through the advancement of new perspectives and innovations.”

The action is getting underway with an opening ceremony on Monday.

An Award ceremony is also being held on Thursday to give out Awards of Excellence.

“There are at least 8 or 9 or 10 different awards and people like to get awards they like to know that they’ve been recognized by their peers as well,” added Dean. “I’m always amazed that when we start the planning for this which we start in the fall, how many researchers come to us and say can I participate?”

“They don’t get any money for this. They don’t get extra time for this. They just want the opportunity to show off what they’re doing, so it’s a really fun event for everyone.”

All events are taking place at the university, and are open to the public.

“The research that we do at Lakehead is for the community,” said President and Vice-Chancellor, Gillian Siddall. “It’s for Thunder Bay and we welcome folks from the city and the region coming onto campus and hearing what we’re up to. It’s just such an incredibly exciting opportunity to celebrate what Lakehead researchers and students do to bring growth and new ideas and innovation to the region and to the world.”
