Salt has been hard to find over the last few days as many continue to chip away at what feels like mountains of ice, but the city says they have plenty.
HRM spokesperson Laura Wright tells us they are working 24/7 to get at it and they are making progress with main roads clear.
What is putting a wrench in the process, she says, is how thick the ice is.
“The challenge is that with the mixed precipitation and the freezing temperatures that we saw over those two back-to-back events led to really challenging conditions for our crews. There’s a thick layer of ice covering most surfaces.”
However, Wright says, the city has 250 pieces of equipment at its disposal, including salt trucks and ice breakers and everything is in use.
“So, we’re working hard to break up the ice and apply salt everywhere we can.”
She adds, the good news is there is a bit of warmer weather in the forecast, but sunshine is key to help melt the ice pack.
How can you help?
When clearing your driveway, try not to put the snow and ice on the road or sidewalk.
In addition to that, avoid putting your garbage or recycling in a place that will interfere with snow clearing, and instead slightly in your driveway.
Wright thanks you for your patience.
“We know that we these are challenging conditions, and we know that it’s making it difficult for people to get to work or school. Just know that our crews are working around the clock, through the night to clear all streets and sidewalks until surfaces are back to where they should be.”
