An average of 700 new housing units per year are needed to accommodate the city’s expected growth in the coming years.
Amendments to zoning by-laws are being considered to allow additional housing options in new and existing neighbourhoods. The changes would permit increased density in residential areas without changing the character of the area.
This would provide opportunities for various housing types, instead of just high-density housing like apartment buildings.
“For example, you might see an additional unit added to an existing home by adding a basement apartment or granny suite or a larger home converted into three or four units,” says Josh Davies, the City’s manager of long-range policy planning. “New homes could be built with up to four units, but in a style that is in keeping with surrounding housing.”
Details will be provided at a public meeting on Thursday night at Moncton City Hall starting at 7 pm, and there will be an opportunity to ask questions afterward.
