Dignitaries express sadness over loss of Navy sailor

Condolences continue to pour in after the tragic death of a Royal Canadian Navy sailor.

On Friday night, two sailors were participating in small boat operations in Bedford Basin, Halifax, Nova Scotia, when their vessel overturned and capsized.

Both were brought to land, but one could not be revived

“On behalf of my husband Whit and all Canadians, our hearts go out to the entire Canadian Armed Forces during this difficult time,” Governor General Mary Simon said in a statement.

“This tragic incident serves as a poignant reminder of the risks our members of the Canadian Armed Forces face every day to protect our nation. We are profoundly grateful for their unwavering dedication and service to Canada.”

Simon also expressed her sincere gratitude to all of the first responders who bravely assisted in the rescue efforts.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also expressed his heartfelt condolences to family, friends and colleagues of the sailor.

“A profound loss for our Royal Canadian Navy. Their service and dedication to Canada will be not be forgotten,” Trudeau stated in a social media post.

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston also took to social media about the devastating news, “Devastating news. My thoughts are with this sailor’s family, friends, and colleagues during this tragic and difficult time.”
