N.S. unveils five-year highway and road repair plan

By Jacob Moore Jan 21, 2025 | 11:38 AM

The Nova Scotia government plans to spend more than $500 million on major highways and road projects in the 2025-26 fiscal year.

The money is part of the province’s five-year plan, which will pay for several major road projects, including repaving, bridge replacement, capital maintenance and infrastructure work.

The work includes two new major projects:

  • the Port Hastings rotary in Inverness County
  • the passing lanes between exits 18 and 19 (Lake/Echo/Mineville and Porters Lake) on Highway 107 in Halifax

The plan will also continue work on several other projects, including:

  • Seal Island Bridge rehabilitation (Victoria County)
  • Highway 103 Argyle Interchange (Yarmouth County)
  • Highway 103 twinning from Hubbards to East River (Lunenburg County)
  • Highway 104 twinning from Taylors Road to Paqtnkek (Antigonish County)
  • Highway 107 twinning from Burnside to Lake Loon (HRM)
  • Highway 102 Aerotech Connector (HRM)
  • Infrastructure upgrades for the Tancook Ferry in Lunenberg County

The plan will also include access improvements for 100-series highways that won’t be twinned. That includes improving intersections, adding passing lanes, turning lanes and roundabouts.

Fred Tilley, the Minister of Public Works, unveiled the plan on Tuesday.

“Nova Scotians want to move around their communities and province safely. This work will ensure people and our local products can move around safely and efficiently. These projects connect us with our families and our products with the rest of the world,” wrote Tilley in a news release.
