The opposition is rejecting the idea of an early provincial election.
Premier Doug Ford has offered hints about going to the polls, including comments this week that he needs a clear mandate to fight against the potential of new trade tariffs from the U.S.
NDP leader Marit Stiles says her party will be ready but the timing is not ideal with the potential of a federal election also looming
“There is still uncertainty out there. I think there’s more uncertainty today. What we need and what people expect from us in Ontario is to stay united, to stay strong, and to stay very focused,” says Stiles.
Stiles also questions Ford’s desire to have a clear mandate.
She notes the Premier is already enjoying a majority government.
“This is a government that has a majority. There is no need for him to go to the polls other than to save his own job,” says Stiles.
Stiles adds an election also sends a wrong message to the United States.
“If I know a bully, bullies are going to look for some weakness. And a weakness in Ontario would be an election right now.”
