Yarmouth Town RCMP are starting a ‘Citizens on Patrol’ program.
It’s a group of volunteers that provide an extra set of eyes and ears for their local detachment.
Cst. James Klyszejko says they’ve had a lot of interest.
“We’re going to hit the ground running and get as many people involved as possible. So far we’ve had about 16 people. I’m also learning more about the program and the roles and activities. We’ll be taking on as many applicants as possible,” said Cst. Klyszejko.
He says it’s similar to the former neighbourhood watch program, and the volunteers receive training.
If you are a ‘Citizen on Patrol,’ you’ll be asked to keep watch on empty homes and businesses after close.
Loring Day got involved in the program in the Halifax-area years ago.
“COVID put a damper on things, but the team leads for C.O.P. decided to get together with RCMP and get this up and running again. We’ve had interest from Yarmouth right to Sydney,” said Day.
He says it’s eyes and ears only, and if you see suspicious activity, report it to RCMP.
“We go out any time, day or night for an hour or two. A lot of retired people take part as well. I encourage people to visit the website, fill out an application and join your community.”
