The Lunenburg Fire Department recently held its annual meeting during which it’s leaders were selected for the upcoming year and awards were presented to some firefighters for their service.
Six firefighters were honoured for their crucial role in battling the 2023 Shelburne wildfires. Captains Trevor Lohnes, Barrett Risser, Colby Rafuse, and Noah Romkey, along with Pump Operator Nick Falt and Firefighter Kevin Taylor, were awarded medals for their efforts in saving homes.
Chief Darren Romkey commended their bravery and dedication during the crisis. The meeting also saw the reaffirmation of the department’s leadership.
Chief Romkey was officially reappointed by acclamation, marking the beginning of his 13th year in the role.
Deputy Chief Dave Robb and Assistant Deputy Chief Cory Hodder were also reappointed by acclamation, continuing in their respective positions.
Additionally, all seven incumbent captains were re-elected.
Chief Romkey expressed immense pride in his team, acknowledging the courage and commitment of the firefighters who responded to the Shelburne wildfires. “I’m very proud to be Chief of this amazing group of officers and all the firefighters,” he said. The medals and reaffirmed leadership positions underscore the department’s commitment to excellence and community service.
