RCMP in Meteghan say they need more resources.
The Municipality of Clare is holding a special meeting on Tuesday to hear from police representatives, along with the province’s justice department.
RCMP are dealing with a rise in violence and calls in the community, as crime related to illegal fishing continues.
Sgt. Jeff LeBlanc says they currently have seven officers at the detachment.
“That’s to cover 24/7, seven days a week and 365 days a year. For seven members to work those type of hours, it doesn’t leave a lot of wiggle room,” says Sgt. LeBlanc.
He says he’s observed a need for one or maybe more officers.
“The locals know that we’ve had an abundance of issues surrounding the fishing dispute and other criminal activity. It doesn’t seem like an anomaly, it’s the new normal.”
The meeting is open to the public and starts at 7 p.m.
