Councillors will sit down Wednesday afternoon in an emergency meeting to discuss the closure of two Bank of Montreal locations in the Quad Counties this summer.
A letter to BMO clients says the Port Hawkesbury and Canso branches will close on July 25th.
Councillor for District Eight Fin Armsworthy tells our newsroom the announcement not only came out of nowhere but is mindboggling and is calling staff together who are likely busy trying to figure out next steps.
“We are going to see what we can get done to correct this.”
Armsworthy says dozens of Canso community members have already reached out to him on the matter, so he wants to push it forward.
“Making sure council is well aware and the municipality is well aware how much this means to the community.”
Bank accounts, loans and investments will automatically be moved to the New Glasgow branch at 99 Provost Street.
That’s a couple of hours or so away from Canso and over an hour from Port Hawkesbury.
The financial institution says new BMO branch information will be included on your next cheque order.
Account numbers and cheques will not change.
The meeting is at 1 p.m., Wednesday.
