Some social insurance numbers stolen in Cape Breton PowerSchool breach

Some people may have had their social insurance numbers stolen as part of the recent PowerSchool security breach for the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education.

About 250 employees have had their numbers compromised, according to a government news release.

However, the program has not collected social insurance numbers since 2010.

Anyone affected would have either worked there before 2010, or the started working there before 2010 and still do.

“No students, parents or staff who started after 2010 have social insurance information in PowerSchool,” the province wrote.

If you worked there before 2010, the province says you should monitor your bank accounts for any irregular activity.

The government is working to contact anyone whose numbers were leaked, and they will offer information on credit protection.

The province initially warned people that some personal information had leaked through PowerSchool on Wednesday.

Personal information like MSI cards, allergies, birthdays, addresses and emergency contact information was stolen from some staff as well as current and former students.

PowerSchool is used to track information like enrolment and grades and doesn’t include credit card information.

It was a global leak but did not affect any other regional education centres or the Conseil scolaire acadien provincial in Nova Scotia.

PowerSchool says the breach has been contained, according to the release. And after they learned of the breach, Nova Scotia recruited a cybersecurity firm, IBM XForce, to help with the investigation and determine how people were affected.
