64-year-old escapes after breaking through ice

Area officials are reminding the public to be cautious about ice conditions in light of the recent warm temperatures.

Emergency officials were called Monday around 6:30 p.m. to Lake Kabetogama south of International Falls where a man in a tracked side-by-side broke through the ice.

St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office says he was pulling a fish house and navigating across a pressure ridge at the time.

The man escaped through the U-T-V’s removable windshield and make his way onto more stable ice.

Others were able to take the man to shore where he was checked out for exposure and other minor injuries by International Falls Ambulance Service attendants before being released.

The Sheriff’s Office says the recent weather has affected area ice conditions.

It says if are planning to head out onto the ice, don’t go alone, take a cell phone with you if available, and make sure someone knows where you are and when you are to return.

It recommends not travelling on lakes you are not familiar with and do not travel at night or during reduced visibility.

Avoid inlets, outlets, pressure ridges, or narrows that may have current under them and can cause the ice to be thin.

Carry some basic safety gear, including ice picks, a life jacket or float coat and a length of rope.
