Little snow leaving snowmobile trails unusable

By Randy Thoms Dec 28, 2024 | 12:55 AM

Snowmobile trails on both sides of the border remain closed.

A lack of new snow and warmer temperatures in recent days have left trails unusable.

In Minnesota, Voyageurs National Park says the weather has also prevented it from opening any of its ice roads.

Officials say while the ice is as thick as 8 inches in some locations, much of it is weaker “white ice” and not strong enough to support equipment.

The park has focused its crews on areas where travel is safer.

Clearing and packing on the land-based portions of snowmobile and ski trails have taken place.

Here is the latest trail report from the par.
