The Conservatives say they will move a motion of non-confidence in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government as soon as the House of Commons returns after the winter break.

In a memo to Public Accounts committee members posted on X on Friday, the chairman of the P.A.C., John Williamson states that the committee will meet starting January 7th to address a motion of non-confidence in the government.

This motion is the start of a two-step process.

The committee’s non-confidence report will be tabled in Parliament on January 27th and could be voted on by January 30th.

Williamson adds in his post, “The Government no longer commands the confidence of Parliament.”

According to a Conservative party release, “Conservatives, Bloc Quebecois and the NDP, representing a majority of MPs, have all announced they will vote non-confidence in the Liberal Government in order to force an election. Many of Trudeau’s own MPs, including his former deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, no longer have confidence in him.”

If MPs vote non-confidence in the Liberal government, it would force a federal election.

In a chaotic week just before Christmas, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland and Housing Minister Sean Fraser stepped down from their cabinet roles.
