A lobster trap tree is once again bringing smiles to Alma residents.
The tree has been a fixture in the community each Christmas since 2019. Last year, it tumbled, and due to safety concerns this year, the decision was made by the Village Council not to put it up.
Greg Rossiter has lived in Alma all of his life and also works for the Collins Lobster fishery.
He says it’s an important part of the community during the festive season, and decided he was going to create a tree himself, down by the Wharf.

“It has worked in the past with these traps, so I figured if it has worked in the past, let’s try it again on a similar size and stature, and there it was built. I constructed it myself, and then another gentleman came down and helped me string the lights and came up with the idea of the Anchor for the tree topper.”
He says all the residents look forward to it, and the response has been very positive.
“It pays respect to the fishermen in the industry and it brings Christmas cheer to the fishing village. That is what we are, we are a tourism town. If we didn’t have the Fundy National Park as our neighbour, besides that the fishing industry is what keeps the village going. This pays homage to them.”
Rossiter is glad he could help to keep the tradition going and he hopes next year the lobster trap tree will be bigger and better.
“Just keep the tradition going,” Rossiter stresses.
