The federal government is investing over $2.7 million through the Rural Transit Solutions Fund (RTSF) to support 12 rural transit projects in Nova Scotia.
The types of projects being supported range from new vehicles for regional transit operators to funding for new bus shelters.
Minister Sean Fraser, the Minister of Housing, Infrastructure, and Communities, emphasized the importance of public transit, stating, “Public transit is an invaluable part of people’s lives. Our announcement today is one example of the investments we’re making to improve existing services while planning for the future needs of our communities here at home in Nova Scotia.”
In addition, the government has committed over $1.2 million in baseline funding over 10 years for Pictou County and Bridgewater’s public transit systems.
Key Projects and Investments:
- Amherst, Cumberland County: Two hybrid mini-vans for door-to-door service – $128,989
- Argyle, Yarmouth County: 9-passenger wheelchair accessible van, hybrid vehicle, and charging stations – $191,641
- Shelburne County: Four vehicles (electric, hybrid, and gas) for door-to-door, wheelchair accessible service – $453,915
- Bridgewater, Chester, Lunenburg, Mahone Bay: Two vehicles for on-demand services – $227,338
- Bridgewater: Two bus shelters for transit riders – $32,160
- Clare, Digby County: Five vehicles for fixed-route and door-to-door services – $455,881
- Colchester, Stewiacke, Truro: Vehicles for daily services and medical transport – $616,959
- Halifax Regional Municipality: Three hybrid vehicles for St. Margaret’s Bay and two hybrid vans for Eastern Shore & Musquodoboit Valley – $276,822
- Neil’s Harbour, Victoria County: Two hybrid vehicles and one electric vehicle for dial-a-ride services – $133,867
- Pictou, Trenton, Westville: 10-passenger van for expanded transit services – $136,761
- Yarmouth: Five bus shelters for accessibility and safety – $120,000
