Average rent prices declining in Canada: report

By Jacob Moore Dec 11, 2024 | 9:12 AM

The average price of rent in Canada is lower than November of last year, but depending on where you live, your rent could still be going up.

The average price of rent went down 1.6 per cent in November compared to last year.

In a new report by Rentals.ca and Urbanation, a real estate research fire, says the shift comes from major markets, like Ontario and B.C.

Vancouver saw the largest change, where one- and two-bedrooms dropped by at least 11 per cent.

But some areas saw an increase in the last year.

Barrie, Ont., saw single bedroom rents jump nearly 9 per cent. And in Halifax, single bedrooms cost 3 per cent more, and two bedrooms nearly 7 per cent more.

Overall, prices are still nearly 20 per cent higher than they were three years ago.

The decrease mainly affects one- and two-bedroom apartments.

The cost of studios and three-bedroom places are also still going up. They rose 5 per cent in the last year.
