A new mayor has been elected in the community of Beausoleil.

Roméo Bourque received the most votes in Monday’s municipal byelection.

Bourque, who was one of five candidates vying for the vacant seat, received 49 per cent of the overall vote.

Jody Dallaire came in second with nearly 39 per cent of the vote, followed by André Theriault with nearly 10 per cent.

The seat became vacant after former mayor Jean Hébert submitted his resignation in September.

A statement from Hebert on the community’s website said it followed events this past summer and his inability to resolve them.

A total of 1,810 of 7,152 eligible voters cast a ballot in Monday’s byelection for a voter turnout of more than 25 per cent.

Beausoleil includes the communities of Cocagne, Grande-Digue, Notre-Dame, Shediac Bridge and Shediac River.

Elsewhere, Donald Bastarache was elected as Ward 3 councillor in the community of Champdoré.

Bastarache received more than 79 per cent of the overall vote. Voter turnout was more than 22 per cent.

Andrew (Andy) MacGregor was elected as councillor at large in Strait Shores with 63 per cent of the vote. Voter turnout was nearly 16 per cent.

Elections New Brunswick says overall voter turnout in the 10 communities with a byelection was 15.6 per cent.
