A new community hub coming to the heart of the Village of St. Peter’s, should bring some life into an old, rundown building, while creating a safe, accessible space.
The town has received $200,000 in federal funding for the project that will house a library, visitor information centre and fitness centre.
Clerk, Meghan Hayter, tells our newsroom, the town purchased the structure on Main Street in 2019, which was an NSLC – right next to the Irving parking lot they lease.
“Through public consultations, we found that the majority of people were interested in seeing those two properties developed. They’re right in at that main intersection in the village.”
How it started
The idea for the community hub came together over the years after the local gym shut down.
Hayter says a not-for-profit was then established to figure out how to fill that void.
“The community group was formed to try to find a solution to that lack in the village. It was at a time when we hadn’t had anything finalized for the building.”
She says ultimately, they were able to work with the group, who will end up running the building.
Big for the town
The hub will act as a central gathering space for the public.
This, says Hayter, is really important where multiple needs will be met in one place.
“The thought of getting them [the visitor centre, library and gym], into the centre of town…in this location…will be a draw to the centre of the business area. It will be convenient for residents and visitors alike.”
She adds, they are extremely grateful for the contribution from the federal government.
“The hope is…it will be a good attraction to bring not only tourists from further away, but even just people in the surrounding areas as well.”
Renovations will start next week and are expected to be completed by March 31.
