The City of Moncton is looking for your feedback on the future of St. George Street.

Plans are in the works to turn the street into a pedestrian and active transportation-friendly environment.

City staff said they are looking at an improvement plan to build on previous studies that have been conducted.

“St. George Street has the potential to be a vibrant and inviting corridor that will serve as a focal point for the city’s cultural, social, and economic life,” said a post on the city’s website.

The 2008 St. George Street Concept Plan created a vision for the street as one of Moncton’s premier destinations, functioning as a dynamic urban hub for both residents and businesses.

The 2013 St. George Street Improvement Plan provided a further series of short-term streetscape improvement projects including sidewalks and curb replacements along the street.

Phase 2 of the Active Transportation Plan, adopted in 2022, recommended a bike lane on St. George Street to connect the street and downtown area to the future citywide active transportation network.

However, a 2023 study looking at that bike lane found that an overarching vision and concept for the future of St. George Street should be developed instead.

“The planned replacement of [aging] sewer infrastructure under the street makes this an opportune time to envision the future of St. George Street and plan for above-ground reinstatements that balance the needs of all users for the decades to come,” said the city’s website.

Three different redevelopment scenarios will be proposed as part of the multi-year revitalization project, according to the city.

You can drop by the Aberdeen Cultural Centre until 4 p.m. Tuesday, from 9 a.m. to noon and 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, and from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday.

City staff will also have a pop-up at the Holiday Night Market on Thursday night.

There will be an online survey in early 2025 along with stakeholder discussions with local businesses and service providers.
