Codiac Transpo adds audiovisual system for transit riders

By Alex Allan Nov 28, 2024 | 5:00 AM

Get ready for a new tune on your commute in Moncton — Codiac Transpo buses now feature an audiovisual system announcing upcoming stops.

Screens are being installed at the front buses showing the next stops and an audio announcement will be made as the bus approaches the stop.

Angela Allain, director of public transit, is excited to be launching this new bilingual service for the bus riders.

“This system will not only benefit passengers with vision or hearing loss, but anyone who takes the bus by offering additional real-time information on stops,” Allain said.

The audio and visual cues will announce the nearest street corner or a landmark instead of a specific address, making it easier for unfamiliar riders.

Audiovisual announcements are now available on these bus routes:

  • 16 Hennessey
  • 50 Red Line
  • 51 Green Line
  • 60 Bessborough
  • 86 Pinewood

More routes will soon have the audiovisual system with the goal of having all buses provide this service as soon as possible.

The Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) teamed up with Codiac Transpo on this project and provided feedback through test runs for implementing their new system.

Caroline LeBlanc, New Brunswick team lead for CNIB, is happy to see tools like audiovisual announcements being installed to help out the public.

“This will make a real difference for our clients, and we are excited to see this roll out on all Codiac Transpo buses,” LeBlanc said.

Updates on new routes available with audiovisual announcements can be found on Codiac Transpo’s website.
