U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Pete Hoekstra as the next U.S. ambassador to Canada.
Hoekstra, a former Michigan congressman and ambassador to the Netherlands, thanked Trump for the opportunity, calling it an honour.
Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly welcomed the early nomination, noting its significance for bilateral relations.

The appointment requires Senate confirmation, however with Trump winning a majority in the Senate it is likely to pass without issue.
