The Region of Queens is calling on water utility customers in Liverpool and Brooklyn to significantly cut their water usage as levels in the town reservoir continue to drop. Residents are asked to reduce their usage by 50 percent to help conserve the remaining water supply.

While recent rainfall provided some relief, it was not enough to restore the reservoir to sustainable levels.

Officials say the area has seen little significant rainfall since water conservation measures were first introduced on November 1. The forecast for the coming days also offers little hope for substantial rain.

Speaking with Queens CAO Cody Joudry last week he indicated that the reservoir would need about 50 millimetres of rain per week in order for it to recover to normal levels.

While the conservation measures are in place residents are encouraged to take steps to conserve water, such as reducing the frequency and duration of baths and showers, flushing toilets only when necessary, and limiting the use of dishwashers and washing machines to full loads.

Reporting leaks to the municipality is also recommended.

The Region of Queens plans to reevaluate the situation and provide another update on Wednesday, November 27.
